Our imagination about mental institutions is filled with horror and suffering images. The people who live there are not really people, but strange beings from a forgotten tale, or people who came out from an unfocussed photo. Like a mirror that is broken in many parts that we are afraid to look at. During the preparation of the actors, an "unbuilding" work was done to eliminate this superficial figure, stereotyped and crystallized by prejudice. The challenge was to build another image that would contain the first vision, but that would give relevance to more humane and deep aspects Dr. Nise da Silveira already talked of the uncountable states of being. Madness is a state in which one assumes a different perception of oneself and the world, and ruled by an elastic time that extends or compresses in waves of chance and moved by the sensations that forma delicate and or arid poem. A fragile language, unconnected, fragmented, where the speech is not necessarily tuned with the line of thought, making it apparently disarticulate and inefficient. the actors dove deeply in this to discover the logic, expressive rituals, vocabulary and original syntax of this universe, coming closer to their own life experience, finding in themselves the echoes and reverberations of exposed loneliness, burning desires, deep melancholies, in a dense and true identification, through an intense work of body and breathing exercises, that enhanced the subtleties of movement: small rhythmic variations, essential gestures, looks, silence, lamentations, that would become or would compose each character. While developing the character of Neto, that leaves the daily routines of a teenager and sees himself being inserted in a tragedy of fate, we registered all the details of emotions in a graph, in a "music score" that would guide the actor in the midst of a family drama and in his lonely voyage to the world of mental institutions, relating them to every posture and action. The sound and corporeal texts and sub-texts, were inter-linked throughout the whole process. Actors that have been users of the Mental health services also participated as guests, interpreting the characters outside from the mental institution environment, for an explicit option from the director and the cast preparation crew. They brought all of their talent, spontaneity and improvisation, in the rehearsals and filming, creating an unusual scenic and strong dialogue with the professional actors. * Sérgio Penna prepared the cast for the Bicho de Sete Cabeças (Brainstorm), directed by Laís Bodansky. He is a theatrical director and a contemporary Theater guest professor - at USP. Also in the realm of theater, he worked in the circus, dance groups, musicals, video and radio programs.
